Impaction
A tooth stuck against the bone or the molar in front cannot come in properly and is best removed before it causes damage.
Wisdom teeth often arrive with no room to spare. At Limegreen Dental on Hamilton Mountain, we remove impacted and crowded wisdom teeth gently, with comfort options and clear aftercare to make recovery as easy as possible.
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. By then most mouths are already full, so these latecomers often have nowhere good to go. When there is not enough room, they can push against the teeth in front, get stuck under the gum or grow in at an angle. That is when they start causing trouble.
Removing wisdom teeth is one of the most common procedures in dentistry, and it sits within our wider tooth extraction care. Taking them out before problems set in is often simpler than waiting, but we never remove a healthy wisdom tooth that has room and can be kept clean. The decision always starts with a proper look at how yours are sitting.
We take an x-ray to see the full picture, including the part of the tooth below the gum. These are the situations where removal usually makes sense.

When a wisdom tooth pushes on its neighbours, it can crowd your other teeth and undo the alignment you already have.
A partly erupted tooth traps food and bacteria, leading to sore, swollen gums and repeated infection that keeps coming back.
Wisdom teeth that are hard to reach with a toothbrush are also prone to decay and gum disease, which can affect the healthy molar next door. If one is already infected or badly broken down, removing it protects the rest of your mouth.
Wisdom tooth removal at our Limeridge Road West clinic is planned around your comfort. Here is what to expect.
We take an x-ray to see the position and roots of each wisdom tooth, then explain whether removal is needed and what is involved.
We freeze the area fully, and if you would like to be more relaxed, we discuss comfort options ahead of time so you are calm during the visit.
The tooth is loosened and lifted out. For an impacted tooth, a small incision in the gum may be needed to reach it safely.
We clean the site, place any stitches if needed, and send you home with clear instructions and someone to drive you if you have been sedated.
Many people feel nervous about having wisdom teeth out, which is completely normal. Our team is known for a gentle, patient approach, and we take the time to explain each step. Beyond the local freezing that numbs the area, we offer comfort options to help you stay relaxed, which is especially helpful if you are having more than one tooth removed in a sitting. Tell us how you are feeling and we will plan the visit around it.
The first two or three days bring the most swelling and tenderness, then things settle quickly for most people. Plan for a quiet day or two after your appointment. Some simple steps make a big difference to healing.
Rest with your head slightly raised, use a cold compress on your cheek to ease swelling, and stick to soft, cool foods at first. Avoid straws, smoking, and rinsing hard for the first day, since these can disturb the clot that protects the socket. Keep the rest of your mouth clean and gently rinse with warm salt water from the day after, as we direct. Take any pain relief as advised, and call us if bleeding does not settle or pain gets worse after a few days rather than better.
Wisdom teeth at the very back usually do not need replacing once removed. If you are also missing a tooth further forward that affects your bite, a dental implant can fill that gap. We will let you know whether any replacement is worth considering.
A wisdom tooth that becomes very painful or swollen overnight is a common reason people need urgent care. If that happens, you do not have to wait. Our emergency dental care can see you quickly to settle the pain and plan treatment. Call us first so we can get you in.
We bill most insurance plans directly, accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible services, and check and explain your coverage before treatment so you know what your plan includes.
If your back gums feel sore, your wisdom teeth are coming in crooked, or a dentist has mentioned they should come out, the first step is a quick exam and x-ray. No. If your wisdom teeth come in straight, have room and can be cleaned properly, we leave them alone. We recommend removal when they are impacted, crowding other teeth, causing pain or repeated gum infection, or are hard to keep clean. We check their position with an x-ray and only suggest removal when there is a clear reason.
The area is fully numbed, so you should not feel pain during the procedure, only some pressure. We also offer comfort options to keep you relaxed. Most discomfort comes in the days after as the area heals, and that is well managed with the pain relief and aftercare instructions we give you.
Most people feel noticeably better within three to five days, with full healing of the gum taking a couple of weeks. Swelling and tenderness peak in the first two or three days. Resting, eating soft foods and following the aftercare steps we provide help you recover smoothly.
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that does not have room to come in fully and is stuck against the bone or the tooth in front of it. It may stay partly under the gum or grow in at an angle. Impacted teeth are harder to clean and more likely to cause pain, infection or crowding, which is why they are often removed.
Yes. Alongside local anaesthetic, we offer comfort options to help you stay calm and comfortable, which is helpful if you feel anxious or are having more than one tooth removed. We will discuss the right choice for you at your consultation and explain how to prepare.
Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day or two, such as yogurt, smoothies without a straw, mashed potatoes and soup that is not too hot. Avoid straws, hard or crunchy foods, and chewing near the site. We give you a full list of dos and don'ts so the area heals well.
